Structure factor

A structure factor give a description of how the incident radiation scattered by a material. It is given by summing the scattering from all the atoms of the unit cell. it is important because it gives an ability to interpret interference patterns that can be obtained in X-ray, electron and neutron diffraction.

  1. the structure factor is dependent upon the atomic form factor for each atom in the unit cell. The atomic form factor may be different for x-ray, electron and neutron diffraction.

  2. Also, if the ions in the basis are not identical the structure factor should be multiplied by the atomic form factor which is entirely determined by the internal structure of the ion that occupies position dj in the basis.
