When I read the Solid State Physics chapter one I found that Drude predicted that thermal current flows opposite to the direction of the temperature gradient because his research actually based on Classical Statistical Mechanics. However, by using Quantum Mechanics his prediction would be corrected .It is right?

  1. I presume you are talking about the thermoelectric effect.

It depends on the sign of the charge carrier. Hence, sometimes Drude gives the correct answer, but for some metals it gets the wrong sign. Sommerfeld cannot resolve this problem, but the Bloch model can.

  2. I guess it's the same case with Hall coefficient, Drude model failed in demonstrating the correct sign. So, although positive charges (holes) can be treated with Drude model, it doesn't demonstrate that such carriers do exist!
